En el camino de intentar encontrar mi identidad en Cristo me ha encontrado con la peligrosa tentación de hallar mi identidad en un nuevo estereotipo “cristiano”. Soy una chica joven, vivo en Nashville, canto, soy miembro de una iglesia, y creo que tengo los suficientes seguidores en Instagram como para adaptarme a esta nueva moda de creyentes que se ha creado recientemente (aunque no tengo un tatuaje en hebreo aún).
Como cliché puede ser que a menudo mis momentos más dulces con Jesús son cuando estoy orando con la revista Moleskin con una taza de café en la mano… a la vez que escucho Hillsong United y Elevation Worship a todo volumen en mi iHome. Entiéndeme, los seguidores de Jesús pueden beber un buen café y escuchar buena música e incluso tener tatuajes pero…¿y si quitásemos todo eso? … ¿cambiaría algo? Me agobio de pensar que en muchos casos sí que cambiaría.
Es muy fácil decir que tenemos nuestra identidad en Cristo cuando en realidad lo único que buscamos es nuestra identidad en una marca cristiana, barata y “cool”. Nos refugiamos detrás de la identidad aceptada por la sociedad en lugar de simplemente refugiarnos detrás de Cristo.
No todo el mundo puede hacer el gran esfuerzo de tener esta imagen de cristianos hipster. Algunas personas se levantan “cool” y no es un pecado estar a la moda. Mi intención al escribir este post es desafiarte a pensar lo que significa realmente entregarse por completo a Jesucristo.
¿Y si Jesús te llamara a acabar con lo “cool”? ¿Y si Jesús te llamara a ministrar en un lugar donde no se pueden publicar fotos con niños super monos en Instagram? ¿Y si Jesús te llamara a una iglesia en la que las predicaciones del pastor no tienen ningún tipo de audiovisual o medio tecnológico? ¿Y si Jesús te pidiese que fueses una persona ordinaria, sin estudios en vez de la versión cristiana de la banda Mumford and Sons? ¿Y si ser un seguidor de Jesús significase tener menos seguidores en Twitter o directamente ninguno? ¿Jesús es realmente suficiente para ti?
Me encanta lo que la biblia dice de Juan el Bautista y me gusta aún más lo que Cristo dijo de él. Aquí está el hombre que Dios usó para preparar el camino para el Salvador y era el “chalado del desierto”. Juan el Bautista no era “cool” y Cristo mismo tampoco era pionero de esta tendencia…“El fiel servidor creció como raíz tierna en tierra seca. No había en él belleza ni majestad alguna; su aspecto no era atractivo ni deseable. Todos lo despreciaban y rechazaban. Fue un hombre que sufrió el dolor y experimentó mucho sufrimiento. Todos evitábamos mirarlo; lo despreciamos y no lo tuvimos en cuenta. »A pesar de todo esto, él cargó con nuestras enfermedades y soportó nuestros dolores. Nosotros pensamos que Dios lo había herido y humillado” Isaiah 53:2-4
Jesús no necesita de eso “cool” que tienes para su reino. Él no necesita que nos hagamos famosos para que Él sea famoso. Jesús trabaja genial a través de nuestro quebrantamiento y completamente a través de nuestra entrega.
Sigue teniendo tus estudios bíblicos en Starbucks y sigue llevando pantalones de franela, pero que tu identidad se encuentre solo en Cristo. Él es la única base sólida, y cuando Él te pida que le entregues algo, cualquier cosa, simplemente hazlo. Jesús vale más la pena que cualquier cosa.

I’m back! Today I would like to share a article that I have read a few days ago and it made me think deeply. I hope you like it.
Killing Christian Hipster
Somewhere on the road of trying to find my identity in Christ I have been met with adangerous temptation to find my identity in a new “Christian” stereotype. I’m a young adult, I live in Nashville, I sing, I’m a part of a church plant, and I think I have just enough Instagram followers to fit into this new trendy breed of believers (though I don’t have a Hebrew tattoo yet). As cliché as it may be, often my sweetest moments with Jesus are when I’m praying via Moleskin journal and hand-crafted coffee mug… all while Hillsong United and Elevation Worship blast from my iHome. Hear me out, followers of Jesus can drink good coffee and listen to good music and even have sick tattoos but if all of that was stripped away… would it change anything? I’m burdened to think that in many cases, it would. It is so easy to say we find our identity in Christ when we are truly seeking our identity in a cheap Christian brand of cool. We hide behind an identity society accepts rather than simply hiding behind Christ.
Everyone may not be making a tremendous effort at this image of Christian hipster. Some people just wake up cool. It is not a sin to be hip. My intention in writing this post is to challenge you to think about what utter surrender to Jesus Christ looks like. What if Jesus called you to kill the cool? What if Jesus called you to minister in a place where you couldn’t post Instagram photos with cute kids? What if Jesus called you to a church home where the pastor’s sermons weren’t available as podcasts? What if the body of believers Christ surrounded you with were unschooled ordinary men and not a sanctified version of Mumford and Sons? What if being a follower of Jesus meant you had less or no Twitter followers? Is Jesus really enough for you?
In scripture, I absolutely love John the Baptist and I love even more what Christ said about him. Here is the man God used to prepare the way for the Savior and the man is a freak from the wilderness. John the Baptist was not cool. And Christ Himself didn’t sound like such a trend setter either… “He grew up before Him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground. He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at Him, no appearance that we should desire Him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; He was despised, and we didn’t value Him.” Isaiah 53:2-4 Jesus doesn’t need your cool for His kingdom. He doesn’t need us to be famous to make Himself famous. Jesus works beautifully through our brokenness and completely through our surrender.
Keep having your Bible studies at Starbucks and keep rocking those flannels, but find your identity in Christ alone. He is the only solid foundation. And when He calls you to surrender something, anything, just do it. Jesus is more than worth giving everything for.
